Why an Ironman?
As a man in my late 30′s, I finally got to the point where I just was frustrated with being overweight and out of shape. Over the years I tried setting goals like “lose 15 lbs” or “work out 3 times a week”, but those types of things were just never enough of a challenge to truly motivate a lifestyle change. After finally getting so fed up with how I felt, I decided to take a huge leap and set a goal for myself that would undoubtedly force me to make a complete lifestyle change.
In April of 2009, I set out to become an Ironman Finisher and signed up to participate in Ironman Florida 2009 in Panama City Beach. Going from being overweight and out of shape to completing an Ironman in just 8 months probably wasn’t the smartest idea…but I was desperate to find a way to get healthy.
As a result of making this goal for myself, it ended up being the catalyst to becoming totally in love with all things triathlon. That love has been bittersweet since I have grown extremely passionate about the sport, yet a little saddened that I didn’t find its rewards many years ago.
I have since completed the 70.3 in Augusta, GA on September 26th, 2009 and Ironman Florida on November 7th, 2009 along with a numerous smaller races on the way.
